Katie Cook - Honorary Member

At Motor City Comic Con, artist Katie Cook was presented with an honorary membership to the Legion. I just came across this on her blog:

the highlight of the convention, for me, was saturday afternoon. i made my way to the 501st booth where i was going sit for a bit and do free star wars sketches. before i even sat down, i was told to stand aside and was surprised with a plaque and a name tag officially inducing me as an honorary member of the 501st.

501stkatie3

i was VERY surprised. i'm so insanely thrilled about this that i'm not sure i can put it into words without sounding like a) an idiot and b) a giant nerd.

to the 501st, thank you SO much. i'll be sending out some individual e-mails to a few of you... but i just wanted to give a huge "THANKS!" to you all now. i love the 501st and all the good things that you guys do for charities, your communities, children and the star wars fandom.

The Real 501st

I came across this on Youtube - members of the 501st Airborne in action in Iraq:

A Statue for Darth Vader?

This looks interesting:

CHEWIE BACKS BID FOR VADER STATUE
08:41 - 28 May 2008
The actor who played Chewbacca in the Star Wars films has visited Bristol to back a campaign to erect a permanent statue of Darth Vader in Broadmead.

Peter Mayhew, who starred as Han Solo's furry sidekick, visited the collectibles shop in Knowle which started the campaign to add his pledge of support.

Matthew Savage, who runs Moss in Wells Road, says it would be fitting to put up a statue of the Star Wars baddie because he was played by Bristolian Dave Prowse.

Mr Mayhew, who used to live in London but now lives in Texas, said: "Bristol is part of history, part of a living legend.

"Every city where an actor is from that has played a significant character in a film should have a statue like this. It is part of that city's heritage."

Mr Mayhew was joined by Star Wars re-enactors from the 501st UK Garrison of stormtroopers, who appear as the feared galactic villains at sci-fi events across the country.

Mr Savage believes the statue could be installed as part of the £11 million work to upgrade Broadmead ahead of the opening of Cabot Circus.

He said: "It is wonderful to get this support. I'm staggered by all the people supporting us - people are getting in touch from all over the world."

He says a statue of a famous character would help to bridge the gap between the £500m Cabot Circus shopping centre, due to open in September, and the old Broadmead.

He has sent details of his idea to Broadmead manager John Hirst.

Apparently, there is a campaign for a Darth Vader Statue over there in Bristol. More details here.

MR Bucket Refits

I got a Master Replicas bucket! Finally, I can replace my FX one with something more accurate. Now, I'm not the biggest person on screen accuracy, but I do have to say that it is a good thing to strive for. This helmet is a lot more accurate, and overall, it looks a lot better. However, there are some things that I need to do to it first.

Lenses - Lenses have to be replaced with these. They're green, which isn't a problem, but they're very thin and you can see the wearer's eyes. I've since bought replacement lenses, which are thicker, but also gray (I'm not a fan of the green look). I screwed them in and it looks pretty good, they fit very well.

Seam - The biggest drawback is that there's a seam along the front of the helmet, and that needed to be filled in. I bought some caulk last night and started working on filling the crack in a little. I found that it helps to tape up the front a little so that you don't make too much of a mess, and that several coats of caulk might be needed. I did this in stages, filling it in a bit, smoothing, then letting it dry before doing it again. I'll do another coat tonight just to get the last little bit out. It's a little noticeable, but not a whole lot, so once that's over with, I'm done.

Decals - Decals are good except for the side vents, which are gray, and they need to be blue. I didn't get to it last night, but tonight, I'll put on the more accurate ones that I got.

After this, I'm going to work out how to put the fan and speaker in. Because this is a bit of a smaller helmet, there's less space (the FX has a TON of space in it). I think I also need to add in a little more padding to make it fit to my head better. Other than that, it's off to a pretty good start!

Troy Denning Joins the Ranks!

Recently, Troy Denning has been out on a signing tour, promoting his new book, Invincible, the last of the Legacy of the Force Series (which I'm behind by four books at this point.) While out and about, he stopped by the Empire City Garrison, who formally inducted him as an Honorary Member of the legion. We'll have audio from the presentation in the next podcast.

A Warm welcome to Mr. Denning! I met him at C3, really, really nice guy.

Armor Build Night

My friend and former classmate Mike came over last night for a cool project - building an FX suit. He purchased one through me, after I convinced him that the legion was a good group and that Storm Troopers were cool. (It didn't take very much convincing at all.)

Armor kit laid out.

So, first thing, I pick him up from work and we headed to my place with the FX Kit, a box of CA Boots and two Master Replicas Helmets. Remember a couple weeks ago that I mentioned that there were $90 buckets out there? Well, Mike picked up two and sold one of them to me. More on that in a little bit.

Armor kit laid out.

The first thing that we did was unpack the box of armor pieces. An FX kit, for those of you who don't know, is a pre-cut set of armor, which makes it a fantastic beginner's kit. Since Mike already has an MR helmet, we skipped putting the kit's helmet together, which is probably a good thing, because the FX Bucket isn't the most accurate helmet out there.

After unpacking the box, we drove up to the Berlin Mall, where we bought industrial-strength Velcro, caulk for the helmets, gray and black spray paint, gloves and sand paper at Walmart. After picking up that stuff, we walked past the toy isle, which was a big mistake. I ended up leaving the store with a much larger bill, and two Star Wars Lego Sets, the Imperial Troop Transport and Clone Trooper set. Mike got a set of Storm Troopers as well. No action figures though, because our Walmart sucks.

Belt screwed on

We returned to my place, and started putting together the set. The first thing that we did was look at how the pieces went together and from there, sanded the joints a little, to give the Velcro more grip on the plastic. This is something that I didn't do when I first built my armor, and I've regretted it since, because I've had my armor fall apart when I first started trooping. Since then, I've replaced it with the industrial strength stuff, and glued it down.

Mike cut out the Velcro for the seams, and we soon had the thigh pieces done. There seems to be a difference between my FX set and Mike's. The legs have been redesigned, so they're a bit wider, and a lot more comfortable. My right thigh piece currently digs into my knee, and it's pretty painful at times, even though I've trimmed it a little. There's also a notch at the back of the leg in the new suit, which also helps. I started building the Landing Ship, which came out pretty cool.

Mike putting velcro on the thigh pieces.

After Mike finished with the legs, he started on the chest piece, and I bore out some of the holes in the stomach armor with a screw driver, and put in the ab buttons, then assembled the belt, while Mike continued with the arms.
We also spray painted the detonator, and left it to try.

Trying on for size.

By this time, it was 10:30, and I drove Mike back to campus. We still have the shins, upper arms and detonator to assemble, as well as the TX Bucket. We might as well put it together. Then we'll get working on his helmet.

Lego!

TK 9066 Makes Local Paper

TK-9055 and the Cloud City Garrison made their local paper, the Spotlight Living:

Bad guy.....good work
Scappoose resident David Hamm lives out his childhood fantasy appearing at fundraisers and social events dressed in movie-authentic bad guy "Star Wars" costumes

By Gini Bramlett

David Hamm and fellow storm troopers take prisoners at OMSI last year during the "Star Wars" exhibit.

As an impressionable 10-year-old boy, Scappoose resident David Hamm watched his first “Star Wars” adventure in wide-eyed wonder on the big screen. Now, 30 years later, Hamm, a husband and a father of three young sons, is living every “Star Wars” fan’s fantasy.
Hamm is a member of the 501st Legion, a worldwide “Star Wars” costuming organization made up of and organized by “Star Wars” fans who get a kick out of dressing up like their favorite characters. Although getting together in screen-accurate costumes and sharing a love of the ‘70s-genre science fiction movies sounds like a great escape from reality for the child in all of us, the true purpose of the group is nobler than that.

The organization, which consists of more than 3,300 volunteers in 40 countries, was founded in 1997 as a forum for “Star Wars” enthusiasts to have a collective identity and to celebrate the films through wearing authentic costumes. But, most importantly, the volunteers contribute to the local community through charity and volunteer work. “It exists solely for the charity aspects of it,” said Hamm, who is down-to-earth and works as a graphics designer in Lake Oswego.
The Portland and Southwest Washington chapter of the 501st Legion, of which Hamm is a member, is the “Cloud City Garrison,” portraying the villains of the “Star Wars” universe. Volunteers appear at various charity events, social functions and fundraisers, such as the Starlight Parade, Race for the Cure, March of Dimes, Toys for Tots and many other local charitable causes. They also visit Doernbecher Children’s Hospital twice a year. Cruising up and down the hallways with kids in wheelchairs, the costumed storm troopers, with weapons in hand, visit bedridden kids in their hospital rooms. “The thing that surprised me the most is to see the parents balling their eyes out because they haven’t seen that much life in their kids for a long time,” said Hamm. “It’s a good thing I have a helmet on because I’m crying, too. It’s just worth it when you can make a difference. It brings the world of ‘Star Wars’ to life.”

Hamm became interested in the organization when he took his three young sons to a “Star Wars” exhibit at OMSI last year. “It was an absolute blast,” said Hamm. “The kids had eyes this big. It was a day I’ll never forget. I joined right away.”
Although Hamm isn’t as obsessive as some of his fellow group members who have rooms full of “Star Wars” memorabilia, he does have three empire costumes that he’s built with kits obtained through a special Web site. He doesn’t have “Star Wars” figurines or spaceships and doesn’t collect posters or own any signed photographs. He does it for the enjoyment he gets out of it. “I just love the looks in the kids’ eyes,” said Hamm. “I totally live it through them.”

Hamm is presently working on building his fourth costume, a relatively unusual sand trooper costume. In addition to his storm trooper costume, he has an imperial gunner costume and a black hole trooper costume. The costumes are usually made of ABS plastic, vinyl or fiberglass and have all the bells and whistles you would expect to see in the real thing. A flick of the wrist activates a built-in fan in the helmets or the voice activator.
The detailed costumes are costly. Hamm paid $650 for the kit to build his storm trooper costume and that was because of a deal he found on eBay. “The guys say to stay away from eBay but I got lucky,” said Hamm. “It was a real good deal.” Hamm says costumes can cost thousands of dollars, citing a price tag of $3-4,000 for a Darth Vader costume.

Hamm’s also built life-like weapons out of material scavenged from around the house. He even confiscated one of his kid’s toys, modified it and painted it to look real. Before the costumes can be worn in public, a photograph of the completed costume has to be sent to the 501st Legion to be approved.

Professionals from all walks of life participate in the group, including police officers, teachers, and others in public service. “It’s a real draw for people to be involved,” said Hamm.

Last year, Hamm showed up at Family Fun Night at Otto Petersen Elementary School to the delight of parents and kids. “It’s guaranteed they broke out the toys when they got home,” said Hamm.
